The Race of Faith (Sermon)

In this powerful exploration of Hebrews 12, we're challenged to examine what it truly means to run the race of faith. The message begins with a crucial reminder: our heavenly faith cannot be tied to earthly outcomes. Looking back at Hebrews 11, we see two groups of faithful believers - some who shut the mouths of lions and defeated armies, and others who were tortured, imprisoned, and martyred. Both groups had faith, yet their earthly experiences were vastly different. This confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: faith isn't about winning every battle or getting our desired outcomes. It's about keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus regardless of circumstances. We're called to strip away hindrances - not just obvious sins, but the lesser loves that distract us from God's best. The imagery is vivid: these aren't things to gently set aside, but weights we need to throw off urgently. Like filling up on chips and missing the fajitas, we often settle for temporary comforts that leave us too full to enjoy the feast God has prepared. The call to endure through difficult seasons isn't about gritting our teeth through misery, but about maintaining our focus on an unshakable kingdom while everything around us shakes. This message invites us to ask ourselves honestly: whose race are we running - our own calling from God, or someone else's highlight reel?
