Hearing God's Voice (Sermon)

What does it truly mean to hear God's voice in a world overflowing with noise, competing philosophies, and shifting cultural messages? This message cuts straight to the heart of that question, reminding us that Jesus made a deeply personal declaration in John 10:27, where he identifies his followers as his own and asserts that they recognize his voice. The key insight here is that recognition is not accidental. It is the fruit of relationship, time spent, and truth absorbed. Just as we can pick out the voice of someone we love in a crowded room, we grow in our ability to discern God's voice the more familiar we become with his word. The challenge laid before us is this: before God deals with what we are doing, he often deals with what we are believing. If we are operating from a foundation of lies, whether rooted in past trauma, fear, insecurity, or the world's ever-changing philosophies, we will filter even God's truth through a distorted lens. Fear can masquerade as wisdom. Rejection can feel like a closed door from God. Our own desires can sound suspiciously like divine direction. The antidote is not more activity or more religious routine, but a deeper, more honest engagement with truth. John 8:31 calls us to abide in the word, and the Greek concept behind knowing that truth speaks of an experiential, lived-out familiarity, not mere intellectual memorization. This is an invitation for us to examine what we truly believe and allow God's truth to reshape it from the inside out.
