Pray First (Sermon)

Dec 7, 2025    Heath Watts

At the heart of this message lies a profound truth we often overlook: prayer is not a religious ritual or a last-ditch effort when everything else fails, but rather our most powerful weapon and our first line of defense. Drawing from scriptures like Philippians 4:6-7 and James 4:8, we discover that prayer is designed to overcome the anxiety and fear that plague our modern lives, connect us intimately with God, and reveal His purpose for our journey. The teaching challenges us to examine whether we've made prayer our starting point or our last resort. Jesus Himself modeled this beautifully, consistently withdrawing to solitary places to pray before making decisions, choosing disciples, or performing miracles. If the Son of God needed constant communion with the Father, how much more do we? The call to pray without ceasing, as found in 1 Thessalonians, isn't about perfection but about cultivating an ongoing conversation with God throughout our day. We're invited to find our own 'prayer chair'—a sacred space where we consistently meet with God, whether it's a closet, a vehicle, or a quiet corner. This isn't about eloquent words or religious formulas; it's about honest, raw conversation with a Father who cares deeply about everything that matters to us. The challenge before us is simple yet transformative: make prayer first, find a place to pray, and watch how God begins to move in ways we never imagined possible.
