Congratulations on your willingness and commitment to participate in the Church on the Rock 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting!

We will begin our fast on Monday, January 7, 2024, and end the fast on Sunday, January 27, 2024.

Jesus emphasizes in several portions of Scripture that fasting is an exercise for each person in the church to participate in from time to time. Jesus didn’t say if you fast, but when you fast.

Matthew 6:16-18 – “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting.  I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.  But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Matthew 9:14-15 – Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”  Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?  The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

The scriptures record many instances where people fasted.  Whenever a fast was recorded, it is followed by a season of growth and blessing.  As you participate in this fast, you have the opportunity to discover what we read about in scripture.  Fasting in scripture is merely going without food, either for one or two meals or for a day. It can also be the giving up of certain types of foods, as in a Daniel fast. If giving up food is not a wise choice for you, some people give up certain activities such as television or social media that are daily activities and would constitute a sacrifice to you.  Please note: we do not fast to “earn” something from God.  The purpose of fasting is to humble ourselves and make us vulnerable.  Fasting weakens our resistance to Truth, and helps us become more susceptible to what God is saying.

We will also place an emphasis on prayer.  Fasting without prayer is just a diet!  We want more than a diet; we want to tap into the supernatural power of God.  Therefore, we are asking all of our members to pray every day. Pick a time each day to pray. Talk to God about the things that concern you, listen to what He has to say, and pray it back.  We also encourage you to pray the written prayers in the following prayer guide. This enables us to pray unified prayers as a church family.

The prayer topics chosen are to help us “be transformed by the renewing of our mind.” (Romans 12:2) We will meditate on the Goodness of God through the daily scriptures and prayers. Biblical meditation is pondering the words of Scripture with a receptive heart, trusting the Holy Spirit to work in you through those words.  So, read each scripture out loud, take the time to think about each verse, talk to God about it, seek to gain revelation about His Goodness, and then release it over Church on the Rock and our region.  Can you imagine what that will do for you, your family, and your city?!!

We look forward to taking this journey together. We are excited about what we know God will do in you and through you, as well as our corporate body.  May God use these 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting to prepare us for the year to come!
